Leidos is seeking a Safety Engineer to perform work onsite at NASA's Plum Brook Station in Sandusky Ohio.
The Safety Engineer will perform a variety of tasks related to construction, site operations, and facility safety activities. Primary duties include operational safety oversight, process safety reviews of test system designs, permit issuance and inspection. However, duties may involve any aspect of personnel and facility safety including:
Review site-specific Health and Safety Plans (HASPs) to ensure that safety and health concerns have been identified and adequately controlled.
Participate in conferences and progress meetings, as appropriate
Perform safety inspections to determine compliance with regulations and standards; verify that corrective actions are implemented
Participate in project design reviews involving facility upgrades and aerospace hardware and system testing. Provide process safety input regarding associated mechanical, electrical, chemical and fuel systems.
Provide guidance on the GRC Safety Permit System requirements.
Participate in the planning and execution of critical lifts.
Participate in the planning and execution of pressure system, explosive and pyrotechnic safety.
Review lockout/tagout procedures and inspect worksites to ensure implementation is compliant
Review Fall Prevention Plans for projects or test systems, for adequate protection, suitability to the conditions and compliance with requirements.
Participate in design reviews and engineering review board meetings, as appropriate. Provide input on safety compliance and best practices.
Perform compliance assessments of safety and health programs against OSHA regulations and the Safety and Occupational Health Program Manuals, as appropriate.
Conduct General safety training.
The candidate will be responsible for identifying, analyzing and controlling occupational hazards and promoting worksite and/or product safety by applying knowledge of industrial processes, mechanics, psychology, physiology, and industrial health and safety laws. Duties may include advising on safety requirements, designing protective equipment and/or safety devices, redesigning controls to eliminate occupational hazards, developing standards which set tolerances, stress ratios, strength of materials and other related engineering requirements, reviewing proposed occupational safety policies, guidelines and standards to determine their consistency with accepted engineering principles and practices, and recommending technical changes as needed. Works independently to achieve day-to-day objectives with significant impact on operational results or project deliverables. Responsible for entire projects or processes within a technical area. Develops technical solutions that require collaboration with internal experts, deep analyses and understanding of impact on end-product/solution. Develops solutions to technical problems and issues that are unclear and require deep technical knowledge. Communicates with internal and client project team members. Works to influence team members regarding solution design, process and/or approaches.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university/college in engineering or related field, and 4
years of prior process safety related experience in chemical or mechanical disciplines is preferred.
The candidate should possess a working knowledge of OSHA Regulations and safety management principles and a strong grasp of operational safety and health. Fall Protection Competent Person and Qualified Person Training is recommended. Experience with the development or review of piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), understanding of process systems including pressurized equipment, and familiarity with fuels, oxidizers and cryogenic fluids is desirable. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills as the position involves interfacing with client and on-site contractor personnel. Candidate must be proficient with the use of Microsoft Office Suite, in particular Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel, for presentations, reports, and other uses.
